As a dedicated trainer, one of your primary goals is to guide your clients towards their fitness aspirations. While cues play a crucial role in instructing proper form and technique, the delivery of these cues can make or break a client's understanding and progress. In this blog post, we'll explore the significance of keeping cues simple and straightforward, drawing from personal experiences where overly complex cues hindered client comprehension. By embracing simplicity, you can foster better communication, retain more clients, and ultimately help them achieve remarkable results.
The Complexity of Complex Cues
In our pursuit of providing holistic guidance, it's easy to fall into the trap of overwhelming clients with a barrage of complex cues. I've personally experienced instances where I flooded clients with numerous technical cues, assuming it would result in greater precision and they will stay safe, especially when they are going to reinforce on their own. However, this approach often backfires, leading to confusion, frustration, and diminished progress and may be adherence. For example, I was coaching and teaching hip hinge movement with his bodyweight only to one of my clients, and my cues were, “brace your core with a slight posterior pelvic tilt, keep your t-spine neutral, keep your feet connected to the ground, neck tucked in, start the movement at the hip, think about pushing someone behind and up, a slight bend at the knee, keep your hands close to your thighs, breathe in, hold your breath, try not to let the lower back round, breath out while going up and squeeze your glutes” and a couple of other cues. Wow, writing them was exhausting. Imagine, when your new client is listening to all these cues even if they have heard these words and practiced them, it may turn out to be very overwhelming for them. They will just be confused, not excited. Complex cues can overshadow the client's ability to focus on the fundamental movement, hindering their overall understanding and execution.
The Power of Simplicity
Simplicity is the key to effective communication. By distilling cues to their core essence, we empower clients to grasp and implement them effortlessly. Simple cues allow clients to concentrate on the foundational movement patterns, developing a solid foundation upon which more advanced techniques can be built. In the above-mentioned example, you can choose the most important cues first. You can prioritize cues such as core bracing, hands closer to the thighs, start the movement at the hip and squeeze your glutes at the top. These cues are simple and important. They learn to keep their spine safe and activate their glutes at the top rather than their lower back muscle. When clients understand and can execute cues with confidence, they experience a greater sense of accomplishment and progress, fueling their motivation to continue on their fitness journey.
Clear and Concise Communication
Effective cueing requires clear and concise communication. Avoid jargon, technical terms, or convoluted descriptions that may confuse clients. Instead, choose language that is relatable, easy to understand, and resonates with their experiences. For example, using cues such as "chest up," "engage your core," or "tighten your butt" can provide straightforward instructions that clients can immediately connect with. Remember, the goal is to simplify the cues without compromising their effectiveness.
Building Trust and Confidence and Their Adherence (Word count: 100)
When clients feel understood and can easily follow your cues, it cultivates a sense of trust and confidence in your coaching abilities. By providing cues that resonate and produce tangible results, clients develop faith in your expertise, leading to stronger client-trainer relationships. As trust and confidence grow, clients become more receptive to your guidance, enhancing their overall training experience and motivation to push their boundaries. As a result, they will adhere to your program and your coaching.
Progressive Cueing (Word count: 100)
As clients become comfortable with the foundational cues, you can gradually introduce more explicit and technical cues to refine their technique and advance their training. Progressive cueing ensures that clients continue to challenge themselves while maintaining clarity and comprehension.
The power of simple cues in client success cannot be overstated. By embracing simplicity, we unlock the potential for clearer communication, enhanced understanding, and greater client retention. Remember to prioritize fundamental movements, communicate clearly and concisely, and build trust and confidence through effective cueing. Through progressive cueing, you can guide clients towards their goals while fostering a strong client-trainer connection. Embrace simplicity, empower your clients, and witness the transformational impact of simple cues on their journey towards unlocking their optimal fitness.
By adopting this approach, you'll not only retain more clients but also witness the joy of their progress and the satisfaction of contributing to their success.
